How do you know if you are choosing the best dog food for your four-legged best friend? You don’t want just to choose anything, you want to choose a product that is packed with the nutrients that your dog needs, but you also want to make sure that there aren’t any questionable additives or ingredients.
It’s a lot to consider. Luckily, we are here to take a lot of that guesswork out of the equation, and we think we’ve found a great dog food that you can give your dog and not worry about its ingredients.
You might be asking yourself what makes this particular brand of dog food so special? Well, let’s dive in!
Wellness is a company that uses human grade ingredients, a fact that has been proven in the court of law, as the company has been taken to court to dispute the validity of their claims and they won! The company (which is owned by Wellpet LLC, a child company of Berwind Corporation) makes a variety of wet (canned) and dry food for your pet, and they have maintained a good reputation with pet owners for a very long time now.
The CORE line of products are grain free, have a low carbohydrate count, and offers more protein than most others. In the line of foods, there are seven different recipes, like the reduced fat formula to help pudgy dogs lose a bit of weight, for example.
When you buy this food, you can rest assured that they are getting quality food because the Wellness brand foods do contain:
The company claims that this particular line of food is supposed to be sensitive enough for dogs with food sensitivities and/or allergies. According to Wellness, their foods only have five main ingredients that have been chosen just for their nutritional value. Some examples of the ingredients they use are chicken, turkey, chicken liver, chicken broth, sweet potato, carrots, apples and a slew of other vegetables and fruits.
We took a look at the reviews left by verified purchasers on Amazon and overall the reviews were relatively positive. 68% of the customers left 5-star reviews, 14% left 4-star reviews, and 18% left 3-star and below. In our opinion, that’s a good sign about the quality of the product and it looks promising.
An example of a 5-star review is one which a woman talks about how one of her Yorkies was having bladder stones that required surgery, but because of a previous surgery the dog had, the chances of survival wasn’t certain. So she did some research and believed that by switching to Wellness CORE Natural Grain Free Wet Canned Dog Food, it will help her dog. She claims that almost immediately she saw an improvement!
When you look at the reviews from customers who buy this brand of dog food, this is pretty much how they all go. Each user shared a story how they dog was suffering from one thing or another, be it low energy, who had low weight, digestion problems—you name it, they had it. So it’s safe to say that this truly is a brand loved by pets and pet owners.
In all honesty, we can’t find anything bad about this brand of dog food. They use natural ingredients, they even go so far to use human grade ingredients! There are plenty of flavors in the CORE line to choose from, and if you buy from Amazon, you can get a pack of 18 12.5 ounce cans on a subscription plan where you can save 5%.
We want to point out that there’s going to be some ingredients that are used to replace the grains, the most common being peas, as they are used for a carbohydrate and a protein substitute. Other questionable (but not harmful) ingredients include rye flour being used as a filler and flaxseed. Flaxseed raises a few eyebrows because it has several of the same properties as soy, and that could cause problems with your dog’s hormones.
Other than the questionable ingredients, we can’t really find much at fault with this product line. We do want to mention that it can be a little expensive. Keep in mind that It isn’t so bad if you can get two meals out of a can, but if you are giving your dog a whole can each meal time, or if you have multiple dogs, it can get pretty expensive. But, then again that’s the price of a quality product that you can feel good about giving to your pet.
Just looking at the ingredients (both what is used and what isn’t used!), we feel that this dog food is a great option. We feel that the CORE line of dog food from Wellness is very good. Although some dogs may need a higher percentage of fat and protein in their diets (CORE only has 21 to 26% crude protein and 11 to 12% crude fat), you can always incorporate some dry kibble into their meals to balance out the ratios.
It is important that when we feed our dogs, we give them the best possible food we can. Sometimes that does come with a hefty price tag, but isn’t your dog’s health worth every red cent? Think about it, the healthier your dog is, the longer they’ll live, and the longer they will be in your life to give you companionship.
